The vehicle itself has an all-welded polygonal hull with the driver at the front, fighting compartment in the centre and an engine compartment to the rear. The suspension for the vehicle is virtually the same as its predecessor the 'Dingo' but the longer wheelbase, almost 31" , and larger engine gives the Ferret a much better cross-country performance. A spare wheel is carried on the left side of the hull and there is a large stowage bin on the right hand side in addition to the stowage bins built into the vehicles mud guards. Both the spare wheel and the rhs stowage bin are mounted on detachable escape hatches built into the lower hull sides.

The vehicle is powered by a Rolls-Royce B60 six-cylinder petrol engine that develops 116-125bhp depending on the version. Drive is transmitted through a fluid flywheel and five-speed preselect gearbox to the transfer box and then by drive shafts to the bevel boxes at each wheel station. The bevel boxes transmit the drive via short drive shafts and tractor joints to epicyclic final drives in the wheel hubs.
