FERRET RUN FLAT TIRES

This page shows a Dunlop R.F.H.S.2 run flat tire and wheel assembly taken off 00DC81 due to loss of air. Upon examination the cause was found to be a THORN that had entered between the lugs of the tire (the thin part) and made a very small hole in the tube!

Photo #1 - The inner (with studs) and outer parts of the run flat wheel assembly

PHOTO #2 - The thin part of the two piece aluminum wheel. The two pieces separated very easily.

PHOTO #3 - The two pieces of the wheel laid against each other (OK, I know the valve slot is misaligned)

PHOTO #4 - The inside of the thick part of the wheel which has the mounting studs (the wedge shaped part)

PHOTO #5 - The inner tube - this one looked like a new tube. Note the labeling which indicates it is for a tire with spacer only!

PHOTO #6 - The tire bead area, which is very thick

PHOTO #7 - The seldom seen run flat insert. It is quite thick, and a bit of a concave outer surface for the tube.

And that is what is inside a run flat tire & wheel assembly! The tube can be removed, patched and reinstalled without too much trouble. It helps to have some good tire irons to assist in getting the insert back into the tire (remember to put the tube in first).
